As part of its ‘Window to the Galilee’ Programme, the Galilee Foundation held a literary event with the renowned Turkish writer, Elif Shafak, on 19 March at the home of Sawsan and Ayman Asfari, to raise awareness of the work of the Galilee Foundation and to familiarise the community with the issues in the region.
Shafak, an award-winning novelist and the most widely read woman writer in Turkey. Critics have named her as “one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary Turkish and world literature”.
Shafak was invited to give a talk about politics, literature and the role of women in the Middle East. The evening was attended by about 100 people, and it was an intimate occasion where the author was able to answer questions about different relevant topics.
There was also a book signing for the author, with 20% of the proceeds donated to the Galilee Foundation. An element of fun to the evening were the cupcakes made by a supporter of the Foundation, who personalised the cupcakes with the Galilee Foundation’s name and logo, and the titles of some of Shafak’s books.
